What happened

A major fire broke out in a company department in Novedrate, in the province of Como, Italy, that specialises in metalworking. Seven men, presumed to be employees, were examined by health personnel for exposure to the fumes emanating from the fire. The health authorities have confirmed that their conditions are satisfactory. The fire is believed to have originated in the galvanic department of the company, where cyanide is treated, a highly toxic substance that poses significant risks to human health and the environment. The company is classified as ‘at risk of a major accident’ due to the presence of dangerous substances, which necessitate the implementation of specialised management procedures. The complexity of the situation necessitated the deployment of the CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) Unit. The intervention was conducted by technicians from ARPA Lombardia (the Regional Environmental Protection Agency), the Carabinieri, and the AREU (the Regional Emergency and Urgency Agency). The Municipality of Novedrate advised residents on its social media channels to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution and to remain indoors. Local authorities have stated that ongoing checks have not identified any immediate dangers or risks to the population. Serafino Grassi, the Mayor of Novedrate, has asserted that there is no risk of contamination.
