What happened

A five-month-old infant passed away at the ‘Gaslini’ hospital in Genoa, having been transferred from ‘Sant’Andrea’ hospital in La Spezia in critical condition. The cause of death was determined to be a meningococcal infection. The Genoa prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation and ordered an autopsy to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death. According to the initial information, the infant presented to the hospital in La Spezia with a high fever. Following a medical examination, the decision was made to promptly transfer the infant to the hospital in Genoa. Despite the implementation of treatment measures, the child ultimately succumbed to the infection. To establish the sequence of events and the temporal aspects of the case, investigators are examining the medical records from both hospitals.
