A suspected terrorist affiliated with ISIS has been apprehended in the province of Naples. The 34-year-old Moroccan individual was allegedly planning attacks against the Jewish community of Naples. During the police operation, searches were also conducted on individuals connected to the alleged terrorist. The investigation, which was also conducted on digital platforms, allowed the acquisition of elements that suggest the suspect belongs to a presumed cell of the ISIS terrorist group in Campania. Investigators found training videos on how to carry out violent acts against the Jewish community of Naples, and the accused is believed to have conducted an ‘inspection’ near the synagogue in Naples in October 2020. The accused also expressed a desire to obtain a knife to use in a hypothetical terrorist attack. The charges against the accused include ‘association for the purpose of terrorism, including international terrorism, or subversion of the democratic order.’ The investigation also revealed evidence to support the accusations of apology and dissemination, via electronic means, of subversive material. The police operation was overseen by the Anti-Terrorism Group of the Prosecutor’s Office, who were responsible for executing the detention order in prison.
