What happened

The multinational nuclear power company Newcleo, a joint venture between Italian and Slovak entities headquartered in Turin, has entered into two agreements in Rome with Slovak companies for building up to four Generation IV reactors in Slovakia, as announced in a press release. These Generation IV reactors utilise spent fuel from conventional reactors, enabling Slovakia to implement a recycling process for its radioactive waste. The agreements were signed during the official visit to Italy of the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, and the Minister of Economy of Slovakia, Denisa Saková. The primary agreement, which was concluded with the state-owned enterprise Javys, stipulates the establishment of a joint venture to construct up to four 200-megawatt lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) at the Javys facility in Bohunice. The projected expenditure for this undertaking is estimated to be €3.2 billion. The second agreement, signed with the nuclear engineering company Vuje, establishes a framework for technical and commercial cooperation to support the development and construction of lead-cooled reactors by the Italian company, primarily in Slovakia.
