China has released an update on the seasonal surge in respiratory viruses, particularly human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections. Although the recent HMPV outbreak has raised concerns among the public, the World Health Organization (WHO) has sought to allay these concerns, stating that such outbreaks are to be expected in the winter months and should not be a cause for significant concern. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that samples collected from patients with influenza-like illness across mainland China in the first week of January 2025 showed an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among children aged 4 years and younger. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized that the recent increase in respiratory infections is consistent with normal seasonal patterns seen in temperate climates, although it acknowledged that the simultaneous circulation of multiple pathogens could place additional strain on healthcare systems. To mitigate the spread of winter respiratory viruses, the WHO has recommended preventive measures, including wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, frequent hand washing, and following public health advice on vaccination.
