The Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) has reported an increase in cases of influenza/parainfluenza syndrome following the conclusion of the Christmas holidays and the reopening of schools. Since the beginning of the second week of 2025, 667 thousand infections have been reported, bringing the total to 5,851,000 cases since the onset of health surveillance. Data communicated by the ISS reveals an incidence level of 11.3 cases per thousand patients, in comparison to 9.9 cases the previous week. The increase in cases also involves respiratory viruses, as explained by Vincenzo Scotti, general secretary of FIMMG, the Federation of General Practitioners. The spread of infections from Norovirus, which causes gastrointestinal symptoms, is also a subject of interest. Scotti also emphasised that children are the primary carriers of influenza/parainfluenza syndromes. Campania has been identified as the region with the highest incidence of influenza, and transmission to elderly individuals with chronic conditions is particularly pronounced. In Naples, the surge in influenza cases has led to a notable increase in emergency room visits, prompting medical professionals to restrict hospital admissions.
