What happened

Constellation, the leading operator of nuclear power plants in the U.S. with a fleet of 21 nuclear power plants at 15 sites, has been awarded contracts by the General Services Administration (GSA) totaling more than $1 billion to supply electricity to more than 13 federal agencies. Under one of these contracts, the largest in GSA history at $840 million over 10 years, Constellation will supply more than 1 million megawatt hours per year beginning in 2025. Part of this supply will come from reactor upgrades. According to the GSA, this procurement will provide a low-cost, reliable supply of nuclear energy for 10 years, accelerating progress towards a carbon-free energy future and protecting ratepayers from future price increases. The agreement will add 1,100 MW of clean energy by 2028, enough to power more than one million homes. Constellation also signed a 20-year agreement with Microsoft to restart Unit 1 of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, now renamed Crane.
