What happened

The Italian Ministry of Health has mandated the recall of a batch of frozen clams from the market due to the presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a compound belonging to the PFAS group, in quantities deemed to pose a significant risk to human health. The clams were packaged by a seafood company based in Tien Giang province, Vietnam. The presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in quantities that exceed the permitted limits constitutes a substantial chemical risk. Consequently, consumers should refrain from consuming the product and return it to the point of sale. Clinical studies have demonstrated that prolonged exposure to this compound, particularly through dietary intake, can have deleterious consequences, including the accumulation of PFOA in organs such as the liver and kidneys, as well as in the blood. Furthermore, PFOA has the potential to contaminate the environment, particularly soil and water.
