What happened

According to Luca Puccetti, Secretary of the FIMMG of Pisa (Federation of General Practitioners), in Pisa and its province, the seasonal flu has not yet reached its maximum spread, also thanks to a good vaccination campaign, which this year has affected many young people. However, vigilance remains high, especially among the elderly and the more fragile. Mathematical models developed by the Italian Ministry of Health predict a shift in the peak to the first weeks of February 2025, followed by a gradual decline in cases. This is largely due to the widespread uptake of the vaccination campaign by young people and adults, as well as the elderly and frail. Nevertheless, it is important to remember that influenza viruses are also susceptible to mutation, and vaccines cannot always be an impenetrable barrier, warns Puccetti. Avoiding crowded places and ensuring a good supply of vitamin C through daily consumption of fruit and vegetables remain essential preventive measures to safeguard public health. In the last few weeks of the year, there have also been cases related to various viruses that have caused gastrointestinal or first respiratory complications and benign pathologies that have resolved without the use of medication.
