A 4-month-old male infant from Pieve Fosciana, in the province of Lucca, died of fulminant meningitis at the Meyer Paediatric Hospital in Florence, 48 hours after the onset of high fever. Following successful treatment with antipyretics at the emergency room of the hospital in Barga, the infant was discharged. As the patient’s fever increased once more, the medical team deemed it necessary to arrange a rapid transfer to the Meyer Paediatric Hospital in Florence. Despite the implementation of intensive treatment measures, the patient ultimately succumbed to the illness. The clinical course was marked by a rapid and severe progression. According to health sources, the infant had not been vaccinated. Preliminary investigations indicated a diagnosis of meningococcal type B infection.
