In a collaborative operation, the Italian Guardia di Finanza (GdF) and the Customs and Monopolies Agency seized a tonne of barrels that had been imported without the requisite authorisations. This seizure was made in the port of Gioia Tauro, Reggio Calabria province, Italy, where the explosive material was found in containers shipped from China. While the attached customs documentation attested to the lawful nature of the cargo within the containers, subsequent inspections, facilitated by the advanced scanning technology possessed by the GdF personnel, as well as by the Customs and Monopolies Agency, uncovered the illicit materials concealed within a shipment of cover cargo. The current execution of the barrel-destroying activity is the responsibility of the ‘Nucleo Artificieri’ (Bomb Disposal Unit) of CERIMANT, the Italian Army’s supply and maintenance centre.
