The Coast Guard of Rimini, Italy, has directed the anti-pollution operation called ‘Pollex 2024’ to test the response to a hypothetical scenario of diesel leakage in the marine environment, caused by the sinking of a fishing vessel moored on the quay of the port channel city. The Fire Department of Rimini took part in the exercise with three vehicles and ten operational units, the Civil Protection of the Emilia Romagna Region and, under the coordination of the latter, volunteers from the municipal Civil Protection, the Italian branch of the Red Cross in Rimini and the company ‘Petroltecnica S.p.a.’, which specializes in the control and remediation of pollution from oil spills. The Fire Department has used NBCR (Nuclear Biological Chemical Radiological) tools and operators and aquatic rescuers on board rescue inflatable boats to ensure the safety of operations on land and at sea. The operation’s successful outcome has validated the emergency response system’s overall preparedness and effectiveness.
