What happened

The Special Operations Department (ROS) of the Italian Carabinieri dismantled a group dedicated to proselytising and pro-Islamic State propaganda. The heads of the group were two young girls. The investigation, conducted by the Bologna Public Prosecutor’s Office, had been coordinated by the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office. The 22-year-old Pakistani woman residing in Bologna, regarded as the group’s leader, and the 18-year-old girl from Spoleto, born in Italy to an Algerian family, had openly expressed their desire to take action against those they perceived as unfaithful. This intention was expressed clearly in several public posts on social media and private conversations. The two girls were apprehended and remanded into custody, along with the 19-year-old brother of the Bologna leader and a 27-year-old man. The precautionary measure also concerns a fifth suspect, a 20-year-old of Moroccan origin living in Milan, who ‘enlisted’ in Ethiopia last November.
