A case of scabies has been reported at the ‘Ettore Majorana’ secondary school in Capannori, Lucca, Italy. The patient was treated promptly, and following the submission of a report to the local health authority (ASL), the school administration informed the families of those registered with the ASL regarding the necessity for any controls to be put in place in cases of symptoms. While this instance represents an isolated occurrence, health protocol dictates the administration of prophylaxis to the individual afflicted by the mite responsible for scabies and those who have had close contact with him. The primary objective of prophylaxis is the detection of ‘secondary cases’ to prevent possible outbreaks, and this is achieved primarily through self-monitoring. In the meantime, the institute has been asked to sanitise the school premises to prevent the spread of infectious disease.
