As part of World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (held annually from 18 to 24 November), Belize hosted a series of countrywide health fairs with the aim of raising awareness about the critical issue of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and its impact on public health. The health fairs were based on the principle of communities empowered to tackle AMR. This approach emphasises communities’ crucial role in the AMR response within the One Health framework, which combines human, animal, and environmental health. Such initiatives provide a valuable opportunity to engage with the community in a dynamic way. They deliver educational messages regarding the responsible use of antimicrobials, raise awareness about AMR, and promote behavioural changes that will help reduce the misuse and overuse of these vital medicines. This initiative aligns with the Global Action Plan on AMR, which encourages awareness, stewardship and national capacity to combat AMR. Belize’s commitment reflects its proactive approach to public health and dedication to ensuring effective treatments are available.
