What happened

An explosion at a fuel depot in Calenzano, near Florence, resulted in the deaths of 2 individuals, injuries to 9 others, and the disappearance of 3 more. The number of fatalities remains provisional. The preliminary investigation suggests that the explosion was caused by the leakage of liquid during tanker refilling operations. The area has been restricted to prevent contamination. The fire service was deployed to extinguish the blaze and avoid the risk of the fire spreading to neighbouring warehouses. The governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, has stated that the situation is being managed effectively. He has also announced that technical experts from the Tuscan Regional Agency for Environmental Protection are on site to assess the potential effects of the pollutants, including any impact on waterways. The Civil Protection Department has issued an alert for a radius of 5 km from the site of the explosion in Calenzano, urging the public to maintain a safe distance and keep windows closed. The Department has initiated the activation of the crisis unit and is engaged in close coordination with the Rescue Coordination Centre, which was established by the Prefecture. The Department is monitoring the situation and has dispatched a team to Florence to assist the local authorities.
