The rising incidence of pertussis (whooping cough) and the mounting proof of macrolide resistance among Bordetella pertussis, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlight the necessity for more rigorous surveillance to remain abreast of developments, American Society for Microbiology (ASM) highlighted. ASM is a key player in improving B. pertussis surveillance of macrolide resistance in Latin America, with a focus on Mexico, Brazil, Peru, and Panama. The ASM Pertussis Project commenced in 2021 in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Global Antimicrobial Resistance Lab and Response Network. Its objective is to enhance laboratory diagnostics in target countries through the implementation of novel tests and the establishment of uniform detection methodologies. In Mexico, training medical professionals led to more samples for pertussis, which identified a case of macrolide-resistant pertussis in 2024. In Brazil, similar results have been seen, with seven macrolide-resistant pertussis cases identified recently. To capitalise on the project’s impact on Brazil and Mexico, ASM is expanding into Peru and Panama. This involves regional collaboration to optimise resources and share knowledge. Additionally, a unified approach to disease surveillance in Latin America is being established.
