What happened

A review mission conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded that the Philippines is making significant strides in developing its nuclear energy programme and the requisite associated infrastructure. In response to a request by the Philippine government, an Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) was conducted between the 2nd and 6th of December 2022. The INIR team observed that the country had made significant headway in implementing most recommendations and suggestions, establishing a national posture on the nuclear energy programme. The country’s preparedness to embark on an informed nuclear programme, comprehensive nuclear legislation, completed assessments in pivotal areas, and the formulation of pertinent policies were all assessed favourably, as mission team leader Mehmet Ceyhan stated. Nevertheless, INIR has indicated that further research is required to finalise the Philippines’ nuclear strategy and conduct a detailed study of the industrial involvement and national legislation. Philippines Secretary of Energy Raphael P.M. Lotilla expressed support for the INIR follow-up mission, underscoring the government’s dedication to rigorous adherence to globally recognised standards in the country’s energy development.
