In light of the forthcoming Jubilee 2025 and the anticipated influx of millions of pilgrims to Rome, health experts have identified several potential risks. While the ongoing threat of COVID-19 remains a concern, with the emergence of new variants and the possibility of further transmission, so too do other seasonal illnesses including influenza, Mpox, and several mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue, zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and malaria. Massimo Ciccozzi and other prominent researchers in the field of epidemiology have authored an analysis of the risks to health associated with mass movements, in which they observe that epidemiological surveillance plays a vital role in preventing viruses from spreading in such settings. In addition to border surveillance measures, the network of health services responsible for monitoring activities at airports and the general surveillance of tourist flows should be activated, experts warn. Furthermore, the initial response and medical facilities must be promptly alerted and equipped with the necessary diagnostic capabilities to address these cases. In all instances, experts advise the implementation of general preventive measures, including handwashing in the presence of open environments and the use of masks in confined and densely populated environments.
