A total of 23 suspected cases of Chikungunya virus infection have been reported to the Public Health Reference Laboratory at Khyber Medical University in Peshawar. Six of these cases have been confirmed by laboratory analysis to be positive for the viral disease. Chikungunya is a vector-borne infection spread by mosquitoes; symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. According to Dr Irshad Roghani, director of public health at the provincial directorate-general health services in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, all confirmed cases were recorded in Peshawar and requested the DHO to investigate, strengthen surveillance, and take preemptive measures to contain the virus. The director highlighted the significant public health risk posed by the spread of Chikungunya, emphasising the need for immediate action to contain the virus. In particular, effective measures to protect people’s health should be prioritised. Three field epidemiologists from the Office of the Director-General have already joined the district health management teams to assist with the early diagnosis and management of Chikungunya cases.
