What happened

A significant fire has occurred at a waste management facility in Brindisi, resulting in the emission of a column of black, poisonous smoke that has severely compromised the quality of the atmosphere. Immediately, multiple firefighting teams responded to the incident and requested assistance from Canadair helicopters to contain the fire, exacerbated by strong winds. The municipal administration has advised the local population to remain indoors and refrain from leaving their residences until the Regional Agency for the Environment (ARPA) has conducted an investigation and determined the necessary course of action. From the outset, the ARPA’s on-site measurements indicated elevated PM10 values. In light of this, the agency has advised the City of Brindisi to issue an order for precautionary purposes, including recommendations for residents to close windows and implement a parking ban in affected neighborhoods.
