What happened

The 45-year-old businessman, who was diagnosed with malaria following his return from a trip to Zanzibar, has died. The man had been admitted to the intensive care unit of Olbia’s Giovanni Paolo II hospital in recent days in a critical condition. Following the patient’s admission to hospital with a markedly elevated temperature, the medical staff conducted the requisite investigations and recorded a positive result for the malaria virus. This prompted the immediate implementation of the recommended health prophylaxis for the virus, which the patient had likely acquired during his recent holiday in Africa. Most temperate regions were declared malaria-free during the initial decades of the 20th century. Currently, malaria remains a significant health concern in tropical and subtropical countries. In particular, malaria is highly endemic in Africa, where the majority of cases and deaths occur.
