According to local and security sources, an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated on Sunday near an Iraqi army vehicle, causing the deaths of three Peshmerga service members and wounding three Iraqi Army soldiers. The attack was launched near the town of Tuz Khurmatu, located about 175 km (110 miles) north of the capital Baghdad. According to the town’s mayor, Zulfiqar al-Bayati, the three victims were an Army Regiment Commander, another officer, and a security service member. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the town borders a province suffering from sporadic jihadist attacks and Islamic State remnants (IS). Although Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State in late 2017, residual forces are still active in rural areas and are still waging guerrilla war against government forces.
