Italy reports over 1.3 million flu cases

The 2024-25 influenza season has begun with a notable intensity, a development that has prompted concern among medical professionals. It is estimated that more than 1.3 million Italians have exhibited symptoms associated with the influenza virus, with an increase of more than 370,000 cases documented in the previous week alone. Fabrizio Pregliasco, a virologist and professor at the State University of Milan, has emphasised that this season could be particularly challenging due to the co-circulation of multiple respiratory viruses, including the influenza virus, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and SARS-CoV-2. At present, there is a markedly elevated prevalence of the condition among children below five years of age. Experts estimate that the influenza virus could affect up to 15 million Italians during the winter season, with a peak incidence expected around Christmas time. Pregliasco underscores the significance of influenza vaccination for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions. Additionally, other preventive measures, such as regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with individuals with symptoms, and wearing masks in crowded indoor settings, remain crucial.
