What happened

Police are looking into a possible lone-wolf suicide attack that occurred outside Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday when a man killed himself by setting off explosives. The suspect, who was affiliated with the right-wing party of former President Jair Bolsonaro, attempted to enter the Supreme Court building after first setting off explosives in his vehicle. As he could not enter the building, he set off the second explosion outside its doors. The police discovered explosives and a timer on the man’s body, along with a backpack that might have contained more explosives and other explosives next to a nearby traffic cone. No other victims were reported. This incident occurred four days before the G20, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro amid a climate of growing discontent with the court and its involvement in cases regarding political extremism and threats to democratic order.
