What happened

A case of autochthonous malaria was diagnosed in an individual with no history of recent travel to countries where the disease is endemic by the Verona hospital. Following the virus outbreak, the Veneto Region, in collaboration with the local health authorities and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie, promptly implemented the surveillance measures outlined in the current health protocols. These measures included an epidemiological survey, the capture and analysis of local vectors, the implementation of health surveillance measures for other individuals in potential exposure areas, and the initiation of preventive disinfestation activities in the affected region. To date, the specific mosquito species capable of transmitting the malaria parasite have not been found in the Veneto region. Furthermore, all recorded cases of malaria in the region each year involve individuals who have acquired the disease in countries where malaria is endemic. This information has been confirmed by regional authorities.
