A 1,000-pound aeroplane bomb with an estimated total weight of 454 kilos, comprising 240 kilograms of TNT, was discovered in a state of severe deterioration in the municipality of Marsciano (Perugia province). The device dates back to World War II and was successfully neutralised by army sappers (Italian: ‘genieri’) from the Railway Engineer Regiment of Castel Maggiore (Bologna). To guarantee an appropriate safety framework, it was imperative to restrict traffic in some adjacent streets and evacuate approximately 5,000 inhabitants while removing the trigger system. Clean-up operations were coordinated by the Prefecture of Perugia and the Italian Army’s Northern Operations Forces Command. The land reclamation operations were concluded without incident, in alignment with the statements released by the relevant regulatory bodies.
