What happened

At the Policlinico San Martino in Genoa, the first case of the H3N2 virus has been recorded in an Italian patient aged 76, according to Matteo Bassetti, director of the hospital’s Infectious Diseases Department. The virus isolated is a variant of the Australian influenza strain and is a source of concern to experts due to its tropism, which refers to its tendency to be located or accumulated predominantly in an organ, apparatus, tissue, or cell. The pathogen has been observed to affect not only the lungs and throat but also the brain. Thus medical experts advise that individuals with underlying health conditions should undergo vaccination to minimize the risk of developing neurological complications, such as encephalitis, as a result of influenza.
