What happened

The latest update from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that freshly sliced onions may be the source of the recent food-borne infection by Escherichia coli linked to McDonald’s hamburgers. This outbreak has resulted in 90 cases and 27 hospitalisations in the US. In comparison to the preceding record released by the federal agency on Friday, 25 October (75 cases in 13 US states, with 22 hospitalisations including one death and two patients with the hemolytic-uremic syndrome), as of 30 October, 15 new infections and five additional hospital admissions were documented. Following the withdrawal of the contaminated onions from the outlets, the risk to the public is currently considered to be minimal, according to the health agency.
