What happened

The European Centre for Disaster Medicine (ECDM) was an active participant in the UN/WHO conference on Space Technology to promote Global Health, held in Vienna on 23 October 2024. At the conference, the ECDM presented a research paper on the potential of harnessing space technologies to improve global health outcomes. The presentation emphasised the capacity of space-based solutions to enhance resilience, emergency management and health systems, which are particularly susceptible to the impact of natural disasters and health emergencies. It was emphasised that the use of geospatial information systems and remote sensing enables the forecasting of the occurrence of infectious diseases, the enhancement of disaster response capabilities and the consolidation of health infrastructures. Furthermore, the discussion facilitated the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal 3, which is concerned with promoting good health and well-being, including the prevention of communicable diseases and the mitigation of environmental health risks.
