What happened

Following their return from Guinea, a family from Jesi comprising two adults and two child members, aged one and four, presented with high fever and headaches at the local ‘Carlo Urbani’ hospital. Subsequent laboratory tests identified malaria as the cause, a disease with an endemic presence in Africa, particularly in regions where the family had spent time during their recent travels. The diagnosis of malaria was communicated to the Hygiene and Public Health Service of the Ancona Prevention Department to ascertain the necessity of implementing disinfection interventions in the family’s country of residence. These were, however, determined to be superfluous after the involvement of the Zooprophylactic Institute of Umbria and Marche. The family has recently been successfully treated and discharged from the medical facility.
