What happened

The Italian Influenza Observatory, established 13 years ago as a repository of information on seasonal influenza, will take on the additional role of a Respiratory Virus Observatory. The new portal will serve as a primary resource on a range of respiratory viruses that continue to pose a significant global public health threat, including over 110 rhinoviruses, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The epidemiological report provides an estimation of the overall number of influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) identified during the surveillance period. However, it does not offer insight into the specific viral etiology of these infections. The virological report is employed to ascertain the characterisation of the virus, indicating, for each week of observation, the test results on a sample of ILI. The Respiratory Virus Observatory initiative aims to increase awareness of respiratory disease prevention and management strategies, emphasising the pivotal role of vaccination in protecting vulnerable populations. The portal will provide a series of interactive tools to actively engage users. These will include the opportunity to pose questions to specialists, participate in surveys, and view in-depth videos on the main respiratory viruses and prevention measures.
