Teledyne FLIR Defense has won a five-year contract worth $91 million from the US Army to provide it with its Black Hornet 4 Personal Reconnaissance Systems, nano-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) designed to be easy for the soldiers to carry and deploy, providing them greater awareness from a protected position. The US Army began utilizing the Black Hornet 3 systems for its Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS) program in 2018, and since then it has placed orders for more than $215 million. Teledyne FLIR has already received $25 million in initial orders for the Black Hornet 4 systems, acquired under Phase 2 of the SBS program. The deliveries of these orders began in September. By 2030, the Army investment in Black Hornet will likely top $250 million.
