What happened

The cybergang ransomware BrianLian, already known for the attack on the organization Save the Children last year, has launched a new ransomware attack, this time against Boston Children’s Health Physicians. Through 60 regional offices serving the Boston Children’s Hospital area, the affected organization distributes infant patients to more than 300 physicians. According to the accident reconstruction, doctors were informed of the first unusual activity on their computer systems on 6 September 2024. On 10 September, the competent authorities discovered a breach of sensitive data. An investigation established that the cyber criminals extracted data from the organization’s computer systems, compromising the personal information of numerous patients. This data encompassed sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, residential addresses, medical record numbers, health insurance data, financial billing information, and details about medical treatments. Boston Children’s Health Physicians has not provided information about the extent of the damage and has not yet submitted the documentation to federal authorities.
