What happened

Member States of WHO South-East Asia set new objectives for elimination of both measles and rubella in the Region by adopting a resolution to expand the fund for regional health emergency and engaging in health response systems for teenagers, aiming to completely eliminate those highly infectious diseases by 2026. In addition, with this resolution the “Strategic Plan for measles and rubella elimination and sustainance in the WHO South-East Asia Region 2024-2028” has been approved, and five States just achieved measles and rubella elimination reaching the target set for 2023. At the WHO meeting, countries also agreed to triple the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF) to $3 million in 2026. The fund will provide financial assistance to countries in the event of an emergency, with the objective of facilitating their capacity to respond effectively to health crises.
