A significant outbreak of avian influenza has been identified in a poultry facility in Codigoro, Ferrara. Based on current estimates, the epidemiological emergency may result in the slaughter of approximately 800,000 hens. Following the observation of suspicious symptoms in the animals by the establishment’s personnel, the veterinary surgeon of the ASL in Ferrara has certified that an outbreak of avian influenza has occurred. This certification was made after the necessary samples were taken, following the advice provided by the workers. The symptoms observed included respiratory difficulties and high mortality. The analyses were conducted by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie, which serves as the national reference centre for avian influenza. The plant was therefore closed promptly to prevent the outbreak from spreading. Following national health protocols, any animals present must be killed.
