What happened

A new advanced radar, the European Common Radar System Mark 2 (ECRS Mk2), has completed its first flight on an RAF Typhoon test aircraft at BAE Systems in Lancashire. Developed by Leonardo UK, this radar improves the ability to detect, identify, and neutralize enemy air defenses, strengthening the airspace control of the British Typhoon fleet. In addition to traditional functions, the ECRS Mk2 offers advanced electronic warfare capabilities, allowing Typhoons to attack enemy radars with electronic interference while staying at a safe distance. This development is essential to maintain the air superiority of the UK and NATO and supports 600 jobs in the UK aerospace industry. The programme continues with system testing and improvements, ensuring that critical technological skills are maintained in the UK.
