What happened

The situation in Sudan is very critical, with cholera infections rising to 14,000 and 430 people dying. The main difficulty is to get medical treatment because of the civil war that is ravaging the country. Both the US special envoy to Sudan and the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have stated how difficult it is to combat cholera in this situation: the health system is collapsing and the number of pregnant women and dead children is soaring. Sudan is at war because of a power struggle that began in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The onset of the cholera epidemic was also due to adverse weather conditions which worsened the situation and increased the spread of the infections. The symptoms of the disease would be curable but rapid treatment is needed, something increasingly difficult in war-torn Sudan.
