What happened

Rheinmetall and MBDA Germany have signed a new cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening their partnership in the development of a laser-based naval weapon system. The two companies successfully collaborated in the past, having installed and extensively tested a laser weapon demonstrator aboard the German Navy’s F124-class frigate “Sachsen”. These tests showed the system’s potential to neutralize airborne threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and offered significant insights and data into its capabilities. Rheinmetall and MBDA now aim to develop a laser weapon system that is precise, scalable, and can be easily integrated with existing naval sensors and targeting systems. The next step of this joint venture is to refine the system’s capabilities to meet modern naval operations’ needs, ensuring its reliability in diverse operational conditions.
