What happened

56 cases of Legionella infection have been recorded in the southern region of Milan, mainly in the areas of Corsico and Buccinasco. Of these cases, five individuals remain hospitalised, with four deaths having been reported. The deceased were all patients aged 70 or above and had pre-existing medical conditions. As reported by national media outlets, the source of the outbreak was identified as contamination of the municipal water supply. The water is now being disinfected using chlorination. To prevent the emergence of new cases, regional health authorities are conducting comprehensive investigations that encompass environmental and microbiological sampling. The bacterium has been identified in numerous residential properties within the affected municipalities, demonstrating a clear spatial distribution along a defined geographical corridor.
