What happened


On 16 August 2024, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a rapid assessment of the risk of Mpox epidemic in the EU/EEA caused by virus clade I in affected African countries. Risk levels and recommendations remain unchanged. The ECDC continues to monitor the progress of Mpox through surveillance systems in the EU/EEA and globally. From 2022 to 31 July 2024, more than 102,000 confirmed cases of Mpox were reported in 121 countries, with 219 deaths. Most cases of clade I have been reported in Africa, with isolated cases in Sweden and Thailand. In 2024, more than 20,000 Mpox cases were reported in 13 African countries, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo reporting the highest number of infections and deaths. The Africa CDC has declared the Mpox epidemic a public health emergency. In the EU/EEA, the first case of clade I was reported in Sweden in August 2024.
