Local Taliban authorities have reported that two young brothers lost their lives in an incident involving an explosion. The incident in question was reportedly the detonation of a grenade, defined as an explosive remnant of war (ERW). The incident occurred in the southern Afghan province of Helmand. Officials have stated that the two children, aged four and six years old, died while playing with the hand grenade. During a commemoration of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Mine Action, an official from the State Ministry for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs stated that landmines and ERW are responsible for the deaths or injuries of more than 120 Afghans on a monthly basis.
