Giovanni Filippini, the Extraordinary Commissioner for African Swine Fever, reported to ANSA news agency that Italy is currently experiencing 24 outbreaks of the disease. Of these outbreaks, 18 are in Lombardy, 5 in Piedmont, and 1 in Emilia Romagna. Although the infection cannot be directly transmitted to humans, there is significant concern among associations and farmers, especially those in restricted zones who adhere to measures aimed at curbing the epidemic’s spread among animals. The resurgence of African swine fever in domestic pig farms is alarming due to its possible health, economic, and social impacts. To tackle this issue, regional health service veterinarians are escalating their efforts to conduct essential health inspections on farms to ensure the eradication of the outbreaks.
