What happened

On 15 August 2024, the Swedish authorities provided the World Health Organisation with notification of a confirmed case of Mpox (an infectious disease caused by the MPXV) in an individual aged 30 to 40 years. The patient traveled to Sweden from an outbreak-affected country in the African region with mild clinical symptoms of Mpox. The traveller sought medical assistance in Sweden, where samples were collected for laboratory confirmation and characterisation of the virus. This was necessary until the case of Mpox was confirmed. The patient is currently isolated and receiving treatment in Sweden. So far the Swedish authorities have reported a single close contact in the country —a travel companion— under observation and in communication with health personnel. Although the contact experienced a sore throat, they tested negative for Mpox on August 16, 2024. Swedish authorities have also enacted several response measures. The risk of Mpox spreading within the country is deemed very low.
