A 33-year-old suspected of attempted arson attack on a synagogue in the south of France has been arrested. On Saturday morning, the man set multiple cars on fire in a parking lot across the street from the synagogue to create a diversion. When the first responders arrived on the scene, a bottle of gasoline inside one of the burning vehicles caused the car to explode, injuring a policeman. The suspect was unable to enter the synagogue and tried unsuccessfully to set fire to its doors. The five people inside the building at the time of the attack were unharmed. France anti-terrorism prosecutors took charge of the investigation, and later that day they arrested the suspect after a gunfight in which he was wounded. In response to a request from French President Macron, security measures have been intensified around Jewish institutions throughout France.
