What happened

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the immunisation of infants is the most effective means of halting transmission of the virus, given that 95% of the chronic disease burden stems from infections contracted in children before their fifth birthday. Vaccination in childhood is crucial in the battle against hepatitis B. Systematic immunization starting from birth is a fundamental element of the training program for frontline health workers, supported by the WHO. With the availability of the free vaccine, newborns in Benin are now protected against Hepatitis B infection, provided that the birth takes place in a healthcare facility. The significant progress in vaccinating newborns against Hepatitis B is largely attributed to births occurring in health facilities, attended by trained medical professionals. After collaborative initiatives to increase awareness and create suitable facilities, it is estimated that 77.2% of childbirths in Benin were attended by skilled health professionals in 2022, as per WHO data. This is in comparison to the average of 71% for the African region.
