Local Health Authorities have reported that, over four months between Corsico and Buccinasco (Milanese hinterland), 53 individuals have been affected by Legionella, with four deaths resulting. The average age of the patients is 72 years. The patients who died were also over 70 years of age and presented with multiple comorbidities. The infection served as a precipitating factor in their clinical picture. A total of 12 patients remain hospitalised.
After collecting around 80 samples from private homes and certain high-risk areas, such as industrial cooling towers, the bacterium causing the infection was found in the plumbing of multiple buildings. Consequently, the Municipality of Corsico has mandated, through an order released on August 8, that all condominium administrators and managers of health facilities, shelters, and other entities offering sanitation services carry out the cleaning of tanks and autoclaves, including both regular and special maintenance, following the directives provided in the order.
