In the first week of August, 24 new West Nile virus infection cases were reported in Italy. Since May 2024, the country has seen 52 confirmed cases, marking a substantial increase from the 28 cases noted in the previous report. Of these cases, three fatalities occurred, one each in Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Emilia Romagna. Currently, the virus is present in nine regions, affecting 28 provinces. Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia, and Sardinia are experiencing active transmission. Additionally, veterinary surveillance has detected the virus in horses, mosquitoes, and resident and wild birds in Abruzzo, Puglia, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Lombardy.
