What happened

Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardo, has secured a $1.5b contract with the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR) to construct and deliver two “FREMM EVO” frigates to the Italian Navy as part of a multi-year program to modernize its fleet. These frigates aim to enhance the Italian Navy’s operational capabilities with the latest in naval technology and performance. They will incorporate cutting-edge technologies like advanced anti-drone measures, the ability to manage unmanned systems above, on, and below the water, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) features, and a cyber-resilient ship management system. Construction will take place at Fincantieri’s shipyards, with the first vessel expected in 2029 and the second in 2030.
