What happened

A Zika virus case has been reported in a resident of the Bassano del Grappa district, Vicenza province. The infection was likely contracted during the individual’s travel to a country where the virus is endemic. The patient is now in the intensive care unit at Bassano del Grappa hospital, where lab tests have confirmed the diagnosis. Concurrently, disinfestation measures are being implemented following regional protocols, in partnership with the local municipal authorities. It is estimated that 80% of infection cases are asymptomatic. Should symptoms manifest, they are akin to those of a self-limiting flu-like syndrome, which rarely necessitates the patient’s hospitalisation. Nevertheless, recent studies have indicated an increase in the incidence of both Guillain-Barré syndrome and cases of congenital microcephaly in countries where the Zika virus has been identified.
